Back To Black: Rooted in Art, Food, and Wine

  • Boyd Cru Wines 8600 Foundry Street Savage, MD, 20763 United States (map)

Join us for an unforgettable evening where the canvas meets the plate. BACK TO BLACK is a premier one-day pop-up exhibit and immersive dining experience designed to celebrate the depth, brilliance, and cultural resonance of Black excellence.

In an exclusive partnership with Chef S. Renee (Kindle Cuisine), Artbae online and hosted at the sophisticated Boyd Cru Wines, we invite you to a multi-sensory journey that weaves together visual storytelling, luxury hospitality, and community connection.

THE EXPERIENCE

This isn’t just a dinner; it’s a narrative. We have selected five visionary artists, each paired with a specific course of a 5-course gourmet meal. Every dish is meticulously crafted to reflect a meaningful moment or era in Black history, drawing inspiration from the energy and stories of the featured artwork.

  • Course 1: Liberated Embers Sparkling Vidal Blanc with Nikki Perry, “It’s the Small Things”

Harlem Renaissance Era (1920-1930s): Black Chefs elevated traditional African American and Southern flavors, emphasizing fresh, seasonal ingredients, and adapting African culinary roots into iconic dishes…and whats more elevated than caviar?

    • Deviled Egg Royale with Trout Roe & Smoked Paprika Ash

  • Course 2: Free Spirit Rosé with Malachi Wright (MRWRT), “BLACK, BLOOD & HOPE”

Civil Rights Era (1950s-1960s): It was during this time that the term "soul food" was coined during the Black Power movement as a cultural identifier for African American cuisine, celebrating heritage.

    • Smoked Turkey Consommé with Collard Chiffonade

  • Course 3: Ubiquity White Blend with Dunnie the Artist, “Victory is Mine III”

Caribbean Migration (1960-1980s): As Caribbean communities expanded across U.S. cities, bold spices, tropical ingredients, and island traditions reshaped Black American cuisine—bringing heat, rhythm, and unmistakable joy to the table.

    • Jerk-Spiced Chicken Bite with Coconut-Lime Glaze & Fried Plantain

  • Course 4:  Living Legacy Red Blend with Tone Carter (Butta Customs), “The Anxious Man”

The Gold/HipHop Era (1970s-1990s): This time food wasn’t about exclusivity or presentation — it was about access – corner stores, carryouts, and takeout counters — places that fed neighborhoods quickly, affordably, and without judgment.

    • Chinese-Inspired Shrimp Fried Rice

  • Course 5: Rapture Red Blend with Kanye Tomiwa, “9TH WONDER”

Afrofuturism (2000s & Beyond)  Black Chefs reimagine African diasporic foodways by blending ancestral ingredients and traditional techniques with innovation, technology, and speculative storytelling to create a liberated culinary future.

    • Sweet Potato & Brown Butter Mousse Sphere

The Evening Itinerary:

  • The Prelude: A sparkling cocktail hour featuring live music and our signature "Black Excellence" champagne moment.

  • The Main Act: A seated 5-course pairing experience. As each course is served, enjoy an Artist Spotlight, where the featured creator shares the story behind their piece.
